Poll stay or go?
I asked three questions:
1. Should I stay or go?
2. Would you patronize a storyteller?
3. Any advice or comments?
The poll went out to friends, and on nyc.craigslist.org for four days in the winter of 2003. I explained that I had a dream of traveling to collect and tell stories. Was it possible to make a living over the Internet? I explained that I owned stuff (including a cat), and that I didn’t have lots of money.
Below are the responses.

I think that you should stay in NYC because of your cat, but, if you find a good person and your cat is not gonna end up in a shelter, then: GO TRAVEL AND ENJOY YOUR ONLY LIFE!!!!!!!! I am a new yorker, and I live in NYC, and you can also do your music here, here is the best place to be for this kind of thing. If I were you I think I'd renew my lease for 1 year, work, make some $ and then when you save go and travel, you could even buy a van and go travel with your cat! And you won't have to pay hotel room! Good luck to you and hope your year will be full of success!!!! Marcela

Basically, you are another 'send me a dollar' site, only this time it's for travel.
But my question to you is, why would you expect other people to pay for your travel? That's not very nice. or realistic.
Also, how can you bear to give away your cat?
You really do need a job. Try to find something, anything, so your dear little puddy will have cat food and clean litter, ok?
You can do your writing here in NY.

let me get this straight... you're perfectly capable of working, but instead you'd rather travel around the world doing your hobby, and on other people's dime. sounds like EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON THE PLANET. don't hold your breath waiting for those donations to come rushing in. but good luck with your music.

There is no easy answer to your problem. There may not be much keeping you in New York, but how will you support yourself if while traveling? At least if you stay in one place, you can find a job. Finding a job is not always easy, and it doesn't get any easier if you're constantly moving around. Go ahead and travel - to jobs. Use New York as a home base and try to book shows and what not in the places you want to travel to - have the venue pay travel expenses. Getting people to donate to individuals on the Internet, I think, is easier said than done. Check out the guy shortly before you who's trying to fulfill his "one dream of owning a ferarri." I have at least $20k in debt to pay off - I'm not sending him a dollar toward his ferarri.

Finding a job is the 1st thing you gotta do. Hoping for donation is risky. When you save enough money you can go and pursue your dream (traveling etc) or find a good job that allow you to travel. (reporter, photographer)

i think now might be one of those moments where scary chioces lie infront of you, and you need to just do it. Write this up, send it to a million magazines, news shows, see what hapens. Donate sperm (i know a guy that travelled on sperm donation and his general annoyingness for a year) Contact a magazine called Places published in North Carolina...they fancy themselves a sort of urban hipster thing. maybe they would stake you a few thousand and publish your travel essay. Tell everyone your plan, but i think you should go. Travel is magical, and it gives so much more than it takes. Goodluck and godspeed.

you'd have to put together something pretty slick to avoid being one of those terrible internet beggars. don't call it “donating money online” call it more like “buying a membership” or something to see the stories and stuff. it sucks that you can‘t depend on the kindness of strangers, but in this country, you have to convince people that you're selling something they want in order to get their money, most of the time. that said, i think it's a great idea. you should post lots of pictures..

I think that anyone with the balls to ask strangers to fund his nomadic tendencies and the intelligence to a website as his vehical for solicitation obviously has the hutzpha to make it as a traveling artist. If I wasn't currently searching for my dream job I'd donate money to fund your travels. If you go stop in shreveport, la in September-there is an awesome arts festival called the Red River Revel- In Longview, texas there is a similar festival called Alley Art that happens in June and July, and if you ever make it to LA I recommend trying Venice Beach and 3rd St Promonode in Santa Monica-all of these places are excellent Venues for talented starving artists. Start with Mexico. People are to sleepy to start any shit. There are also a lot of pretty senoritas or hot cabana boys, if that's your preference. Don't be scared you never know who you will encounter along the way. Good luck.

Well dude, if you have the means, TRAVEL. I moved out here to LA from small town ohio just this past august and I'm only 19. I live here with two roommates (normally, we're inbetween our 3rd right now) and I just work retail to cover my bills. And you know what? I love it and I'm happy. Go with what YOU think is best, not what everyone else thinks is best. I found that a lot of people weren't supportive of my move and tried to talk me out of it. Have you heard of Landmark Education? I'm an actor/filmmaker 4 years ago I took a 3 day seminar called The Forum after which my life has never been the same. You'll get by and probably have some amazing stories to tell. so I say go. I just got back from a cross country trip. it rocked. Check out Landmarkeducation.com this course is only to be described like "The Matrix" if you choose the BLUE pill you go back to living like you have been. BUT if you choose the RED pill you'd better hold on tight your life will never be the same and you'll have all of your question answered about everything in life. it's worth a million $ peace .Brett

I have been in a similar connundrum. I ended up asking a million people what they thought but in the end you have to watch for your own signs. Everyone has an opinion and advice is good but you want to watch who is telling you. I believe the most success is reaped from the greatest risk. It sounds like you have already made up your mind and that you want to travel... so I think you should do it; but do it knowing that it's going to be tough, it'll be a bitch, and you may want to turn around and go home on the second day; but by God will it ever build character. get a job and travel - you can do both. you can even get a GRANT... whatever you DO, you have to LEARN how to be responsible with your money...whether it's saving money by using clever means to have other's pay your expenses (such as offering your place as a hostel a week out of the month etc...there are agents that specialize in this type of housing placement). i'm tired of hearing about artists who are irresponsible about money and expect other people to pay their bills just because they are "creative and interesting"...that's bull (and a cop out). everyone has a creative side to them. i've been an artist my whole life, put myself thru school, etc... at some point you have to grow up and learn how to take care of yourself, and not expect others to. i'm all for travel - but not for running away. get your affairs in order and remember you've taken on the RESPONSIBILITY of raising a cat - and you shouldn't slack on that either. learn how to make a living doing what you love to do and be a grown up about it. by the way - this is a great web site you've built - you've obviously got marketable skills.

Why don't you actually contact venues in different cities and see if you can't secure something for yourself in advance. Recruit friends in other cities to put out the word about your perfomances. This all seems obvious. As well as the fact that "experimental," struggling artists like yourself are probably never going to make much money "following your dream." But, I think you should be okay with that...and Im sure the cat will understand too.

I wouldn't patronize a traveling storyteller (probably), but I do think there are plenty of people here in Portland who would. And if you can perform (e.g., book yourself at 'spoken word' gigs, open mics, etc), you have a much better chance of getting noticed and then supported.

First, you must have some sort of plan. If this is what you want to do then do it right. My opinion is I think you should follow your heart and make your dreams come true. I know it's scary, but if you make this change it would be worth it. If you stay in NY and find a job living pay check to pay check...will that make you happy? I didn't think so. Follow your dreams while you have only you to think about. I am sure you will find a good home for you cat as well. The money you get from selling your belongings, use that to kick off your travel. As for people donating money to you, anything is possible. If they believe in what you are doing then I am sure people will support you, but don't take advantage of nice people willing to help, you must do your part as well. I wish you the best, because I too am trying to make a scary move. Remember change is good, get out there and kick butt. God Bless!

I love your site. I visit it almost every week. It's one of the few sites I go to for some quick, interesting reading. My favorite story of late was the one about the talking rat.
I really admire your spirit and energy too. And I think if you have the time and you're not bound down, you should go traveling. Why not? Tomorrow, you might suddenly find yourself surrounded with kids, or get hit by a bus, or a nuclear bomb could make all the electricity in the world disappear, making traveling impossible. So go now, while you're still young and healthy. Go so you won't regret it later when you're too old and weak to travel.
But, sadly, I have no money to give you. And I doubt many other people will donate money. Maybe a few kind-hearted souls, but not many. Every year, a friend or acquaintance will ask me for money so that they can fulfill their life-long dream of traveling the world. And I think they should. But not on my pocketbook. That money's earmarked for my own dreams. So do what you can...put yourself in debt if you have to (I have)...and pursue your dreams on your own. It'll imbue you with a sense of urgency and mission.
Best wishes.

David, you never want to look back at your life with regret and ask yourself, "I wonder what would have happened if...?" I think within your lifetime you should pursue your dreams and have no regrets at all. However, in pursuing your dreams you must have a PERSONAL plan of action - that would include YOUR OWN PERSONAL FINANCES AND NOT RELYING ON ANYONE TO FINANCE YOUR DREAMS FOR YOU!! (Unless you had a loving and supporting spouse.) Trust me you would be inviting unnecessary frustration and disappointments into your plans. Don't do that. I suggest that you travel around the world like a tourist. Travel lightly and as long as you can find 1)shelter, 2) spiritual people who love God, 3) 99 cent stores and 4) $1 burgers -you definitely won't be cold, lonely, hungry or without rest! Good Luck:)

You don't need much money to sustain your travels, just enough to get your airfare. Work along the way selling crafts from one country in another or work in hostels for a bit then move on. I've met a lot of people who work as the travel. That's probably the best way to do it.

if you go, who would i play scrabble with... granted, my answers are purely self-serving... i say, you already know what it is you want to do. you are just torn by the idea of responsibility... like it isn't responsible for you to follow your heart? you know what you want to do... at least i think you do...
my spelling is bad, i'm sorry for that. i'm a traveler my self. most of the people in westrn world do not folow the dreams they have. look at that country, look at the world and see your self what it does. if you folow your heart and listen carfuly, you will find every thing you are looking for. and what ever way you choose, you should know, you alwais get the best for you. it might be hard sometimes, or you might think it's bad, but if you will steel folow your heart, you will find out that it was serving some thing you needed. so it is o.k to be afrade, feel that feer, but don't be the feer it self. every thing is temporary, every second you change, things around you change, it is the memory that makes you belive you are the same person, in the same place. try to live the present. if you do so you will get the pressiouse present that it holdes. you can alwayse find the way. every thing is posible, some times you just need to figour out the way. folow your heart, listen carfuly, the ansuers are all there, as much as you listen it becomes cleerer and cleerer. when you let go of your belongings it opens a new space for new things to come. every thing has ben writen ahead, all you have to do is choose the way. bombom......bombom... peace man- have my bllesings

It's cheaper to travel abroad than to live in NYC without a job. Your cat will be fun - just go! You will need some money, though and asking 25,000 people to each send you a dollar is not likely to work. Personally, I find those kind of things offensive. I like your site, why don't you build web pages???

People have been begging online a lot lately. It wasn't cute when they started and it ain't cute now. I know, "travelling storyteller", fancy way of saying, "Hey, give this stranger money on the internet!" Not gonna happen, story-boy. On the other hand, if you really wanna travel, go for it. Just work and deal like everyone else is in this economy.

Work at greasy diners and dive bars. Work as a field hand. Work as a butler. Then write a book.
See who purchased what.
