While food shopping with my niece this holiday season, I kept pointing out that all of the snacks she was picking out contained sugar. I guess I’m no fun!
“There’s sugar in everything,” she exclaimed and followed up by calling me, “Mr. Health-food.”
The holidays were particularly tough this year. My family was relentless. Every dessert (three dinners three days in a row) was sugar laden, rich, and sweet. My mother even whipped up some chocolate fondue at one point. People tempted me by holding delicious pastries in my face!
In the end I managed to make it through the week without breaking down and eating Froot Loops, fake Maple Syrup, cookies, pie, or cake. In some way, I hope that my behavior influenced my family, but I fear they just see me as a health food freak.
While at the store yesterday with Gwenn, I reached for some Mayonnaise. While checking all of the jars (quite a variety) I began to get annoyed that EVERY single one contained sugar. Gwenn said, “That’s what Mayonnaise is.” Resigned, I grabbed the brand I usually get and left. Perhaps there’s another way to prepare Tuna…

I realized I had a sugar problem back in 2003 after a weekend-long binge on raw chocolate chip cookie dough and chocolate covered pretzels. As a result, I began trying to quit sugar but kept failing. Finally, I figured out a way to stay off sweet junk food for good.
