This month tell everyone you know that you are quitting sugar for the month. Tell your family, your coworkers and your friends. Ask for their support.
Then do it. Quit sugar for the month. That is, avoid all forms of refined sugars from now until May 1st.
Try to get other people in on it. See if they will do it with you. Make bets with them. Create a contest at work. Make it a group activity.
Get as many people watching you as possible. Wear a shirt that says, “I quit sugar for the month of April, watch me eat!”
This is not a joke. Really tell people and make sure they’re on you when you eat. Then be honest with yourself and stay off the sweet stuff.
Report back here in the comments and let us know how you do. How do people react? Did you get people to join you? Do you know who your friends are?
Yesterday my co-worker was going home for lunch. She asked me if I wanted her to bring me back a cupcake. I said no and explained (again) that I was trying to stay off the sugar. We have had this discussion many times.
This morning when I got to work there was a container on my desk, and inside was…a cupcake!
I do not understand the mentality. When I tell people that I am a recovering alcoholic I don’t find a cold beer on my desk the next morning. When I tell people that I quit smoking years ago no one asks me to step outside for a smoke. So what is the thought process behind bringing someone a cupcake who a. specifically asked that you NOT bring a cupcake and b. told you that the reason is because you have a problem with sugar and you are attempting to eliminate it from your diet.
And just as a side note, the individual with the cupcakes herself quit sugar years ago and never touches the stuff. She bakes for her husband.
I just had to vent.

Oh, I gave her back the container with the cupcake and thanked her for being so thoughtful but said (for the 99th time) that I was trying to stay off the sugar. At least I didn’t eat the dang thing.

That’s wild! And it makes perfect sense to me.
Even though she doesn’t eat sweets, she shows love by baking. Lots of people do. Maybe ask for her to whip up some sugar free muffins. It could open a whole new world for both of you!
Gwenn bakes for me (and I for her) and we try sugar free recipes. We still get to enjoy baking and eating treats without the added sugars.

We have a few co-workers who are the same way. They bring in sweet treats and never eat a single bite. I don’t think they do it out of love. I think they are either sabotaging or indulging “vicariously” through us. Either way, it isn’t right. They know that none of us wants to be fat or sugar-crazed. They know that, had the sweets not been so conveniently available, we would not have eaten them. Still, their desire to feed leads them to go out of their way to bake and bring in these desserts. If they truly intended on doing a good deed, they would eat the desserts, too.
