Sugar Challenge: March 2010

February 28, 2010

Overview:

Get someone to join you and have a contest with them. Put something at stake, create a prize. Set the start. The end date is March 31, 2010 at midnight. Begin!

Details:

Have a contest with someone to see who can go the longest without eating sugar. Pick a start date and then avoid all sweets for one month (or for the longest time).

This will work best if the person is your partner, but can also work well if you are coworkers, roommates, or good friends.

Create a healthy reward promise in case both make it to the end of the month sugar-free. Something like a movie, a weekend getaway, a day off. Whatever works to motivate.

Let us know how you do!

OK….here I go.  I know its already into March, but I am going to do it.  I am addicted to Diet Coke, and really want to quit that, but I think sugar is the real culprit here.  As of today I commit to no Diet Coke, and cutting out sugar.

Hi Georgia. Sounds good! May I suggest that if, by chance, you run into any trouble, stick to the no diet Coke part first.

That is funny that you should say that because after commited, I hoped that I didn’t bite off more than I can chew (no pun intended).  I definitely want to quit the Diet Coke…..so concerned about the artificial sweeteners!  As for sugar, I will be cutting down.  I feel terrible when I have it, and that makes me unhappy.  Thanks for your input, I appriciate it!

Yeah, getting off the diet coke is a great start and could be plenty to deal with for the next month. You might watch this video if you haven’t already. It says that the average American drinks 54 gallons of soda per year. In the case of some diet soda drinkers, I’d guess that’s a low estimate.

I’m a little late to the party too! I started on Friday and have not had any refined sugars since. I did have an oatmeal/natural pb cookie that was sweetened with agave, but much better than having the giant gingerbread cookie that was staring me in the face!

David - love your site and your suggestion of ways to be sugar-free. I particularly like the one about choosing one thing in particular and eating that on special occasions only. I am not sure where my journey will lead me to. Right now I take it one second at a time as the thought of never having sugar again scares me, but if I can get through one day, I can get through a lifetime!

Georgia - how are you doing?

I am doing pretty good…..I took “Unsweet David’s” advice and have really been focusing on the Diet Coke.  Its been tough.  For the sugar…..I am still working towards it.  Its a rough road.  This definitely opens my eyes to the “addiction” of sugar.  Its tough!  Good luck to you!
