Is Sugar an Addiction?

Do you relate at all to anything he’s talking about? It got me thinking. Below is a brainstorm:

Sweets like drugs
Sweetie or druggie
Party means drugs, alcohol, sweets
Jonesing = craving
Sugar high
White powder = flour, sugar
Have a Coke, do coke
Do blow, blow out candles
Get baked, toasted
Wasted, create waste
Drug pushers, advertising in schools
Drug free school zone, sweet free school zone?
Just say no
Peer pressure
Everyone’s doing it
You have a problem when you do it alone
Addicted to sweets, alcohol, drugs
“Relax. Live a little.”

“It alters my mind, and my brain gets so fuzzy, all I can really do is focus on the moment rather than the past or the future, that’s the payoff.”
“It gets so overwhelming, the emotions when I come into early recovery…I get angry, frustrated, I feel isolated….then I just end up leaving and coming back down here where I am comfortable.”

Yes, I can relate to that.  More proof that sugar really is an addiction, and requires all the support and effort to overcome that any other addiction would.

It’s interesting that he spoke about feeling strong and empowered when he’s using.

Junk - junk food.

Yes, and that it ‘alters his mind’.  At a work dinner a few years ago, I had a piece of lemon meringue pie.  Before eating it I had been quiet, subdued, nervous.  As soon as the sugar ‘hit’ (another drug reference) I became animated and funny and loud.  A co- worker said “wow, she is like a different person after eating that pie”.  It was a reality check to hear someone say that.  Sugar was making me feel “strong and empowered”, no doubt about it.

About Me

I realized I had a sugar problem back in 2003 after a weekend-long binge on raw chocolate chip cookie dough and chocolate covered pretzels. As a result, I began trying to quit sugar but kept failing. Finally, I figured out a way to stay off sweet junk food for good.
