The Holiday Sugar Challenge is on! How are you doing? I’m overwhelmed. I am completely in over my head with work and writing and so I’ve been unable to focus on much else.
All of this stress makes me want to buy chocolate every time I am out at the store. It also means I want to eat more than usual and so I end up eating other foods in order to remain off the sugar.
That’s how it goes, especially around the holidays. Everyone is eating and as a result we want to eat as well.
You might find yourself tempted to just have a little snack here or there. Or you might opt to forget about avoiding sugar altogether and put it off until the new year. I can’t make you do anything but I urge you, if you’re eating sweets, to start at least to cut back. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to simply say no and eat something else.
If you’re presented with holiday junk food, don’t eat it! Go for something healthy instead. If you work in an office, be the person who brings in something with sustenance.
Going to a holiday party? Bring a fruits salad. Do whatever you have to do.
The Holiday Sugar Challenge means no sugar from now until New Year’s Eve. On that day eat whatever you want and then we’re starting 2011 sugar free!
For me, I’ve been through the holidays five times without eating sweets so I know I can do it. That doesn’t make it easy by any means, but I know it can be done.
Good luck!
Three days now sugar free. When tempted, I try to think of what I can eat instead that has no sugar. Even though I’m a low-carber, I’ll eat a slice of bread with almond butter if I have to, instead of something sweet. Hoping to make it through New Years as anything with sugar makes me feel rotten and takes a day to wear off.

I can relate to what you are experiencing, David. Even after being sugar free for over three months, I find myself craving sweets-mostly when I am tired or there are problems which are out of my control. I can reason it out intellectually, but it is an old habit to reach for sweets for comfort. At least I am noticing it now. I know it is a slippery slope if I cave in.

I realized I had a sugar problem back in 2003 after a weekend-long binge on raw chocolate chip cookie dough and chocolate covered pretzels. As a result, I began trying to quit sugar but kept failing. Finally, I figured out a way to stay off sweet junk food for good.
