Weekly Sugar Challenge: Week of January 31, 2011

January 31, 2011 Comments (9)

Last night was stressful. I took a walk to decompress and right away the idea of eating sweets came to mind. I imagined going to the store to buy a large bag of M&M’s candy and eating all of them. I told myself it would just be a one time thing. Experience reminded me that I wouldn’t feel any better afterwards. In fact I’d feel worse and so I settled for a large serving of french fries. However, when I got near the fast food place it hit me that I wasn’t really hungry. I asked myself, “Will this build me up or break me down?” The answer was obvious and I didn’t eat anything.

Junk food (or any other vice) doesn’t help matters. We can joke and say sweets make us feel better, but it’s only for the moment. As soon as the bag was empty I’d have been back to my problem and with a pound of chocolate in my stomach. Not so bad, you might say, to have a belly full of chocolate. But then I’d need another bag of chocolate to push coping back a little more. And then a little more. And a little more…

This week’s challenge is about coping. Instead of eating sweets, deal with whatever issue it is that you have at hand. This may not be the case for everyone but chances are that when you are going for a snack you also have something else to do that you are putting off. Try doing that thing and see how you feel. I bet you’ll feel a heck of a lot better if you deal with the issue rather than eating the candy.

Yes great topic ! I’m dealing with same here.. It’s killing me so I decided to listen to you and deal with my issue rather than eating, I stress so so much plus I’m a senior so it’s really hard to follow a meal plan while others enjoy their sweet sugary candies .

Hi Jo. If you don’t want to give up sugar and you don’t like healthy food there is nothing I can say or do that will change your mind. You have to want to do it. There isn’t a way to be healthy and eat sweets until you can control how many sweets you eat. Some people can have just a little here and there. Most people can’t. Many people eat way more sugar than they realize. When you’re sure that you want to get off sugar, start by abstaining a little bit at a time. That’s how to begin.

Hi David! I have been learning a lot about this topic over the last year and feel so ashamed that even with this knowledge I remain weak and unsuccessful.  It is hard and I don’t want to make excuses but on a low budget and as a single mom of a 5 year old, it is very difficult to coordinate getting this right. And your topic this week seems very applicable, as when I am nervous or upset…its seems to be the first thing I do to cope.  I am going to try so incredible hard to be “in the moment” and make this change one bite at a time. Thank you for having your website, I think it will really help me.

Hi Sarah, it’s a skill so even if you read about it there is a practice that has to be cultivated. If you slip up here or there it’s all part of the learning curve. If eating well was easy everyone would do it. It’s eating junk food that’s easy!

David , I managed to limit sugar slowly. It is very hard for me. I Notice eveytime I eat lunch after that I have to eat a sweet dessert and that’s the trigger of my binges. I don’t know what can I eat instead of sugar.

Hi Jo, Perhaps try fruit for dessert. Listen to the audio presentation for an ideas or read the Stop Being Sweet ebook. What you eat instead of sweets ultimately depends on you.

About Me

I realized I had a sugar problem back in 2003 after a weekend-long binge on raw chocolate chip cookie dough and chocolate covered pretzels. As a result, I began trying to quit sugar but kept failing. Finally, I figured out a way to stay off sweet junk food for good.
