I lied in the title of this post. No I didn’t. I want to eat junk food.
I’m stressed from working on my final semester at graduate school. I want to be through with it! A lot of writing has to be done and so I’m tied to my desk. What I want more than anything is junk food. I keep eating as if I’m hungry, even when I’m not.
I’ve got sugar-free cough drops and they help a lot. I’ve eaten grapes and nuts. What I really want is a huge bowl of chocolate covered pretzels! All in due time. My annual sugar binge (which needs a name change) is coming up (5 years off sugar!) on October 31st. Then I’ll have four days of eating whatever I want.
- choclate covered pretzels
- choclate ice cream
- chocolate mousse
- chocolate chip cookies
- chocolate covered grahm crackers
- chocolate candy
- chocolate brownies
- choclate milk shake
That’s all I can think of right now. There’s a lot of chocolate on that list…
That is amazing that after a whole year you are able to eat that stuff! What I mean is, it would be easy to eat alright, but wouldn’t it make you quite sick?
I am basically (it’s an onward battle of course), sugar free, because any sugar, even fruit, will put my blood sugar up. Even breads. So if I don’t have any at all even for a few days, when I do eat it I get a bad reaction a short time later. Have fun on your binge!

David, your blogs continue to impress me. I understand how you feel. Not only does stress want me to eat but also celebrations; it has been a part of my life for so long. I’m also fighting the all-or-nothing. Halloween will be here soon and I don’t want my girls (12 & 6) to go trick-or-treating and eat all that junk! Every year prior I looked forward to seeing that huge bag of candy and this year I’m thinking NO NO, no candy here (not only for my sake but I don’t want them eating it). I am going to work on finding the middle ground.
Bev, I have to agree with you. I think even a bowl of ice cream now would send my stomach into unheaval.

It’s pretty strange. Each year when I first eat whatever I can get my hands on, it’s like, “Oh yeah. This is what chocolate chip cookies taste like. Just as I remember.” Last year I had a huge bag of chocolate covered pretzels and at first they were too sweet. But my body adjusted.
Here are the posts from last year:

David, I think our bodies are incredible at how they can adjust to the different things we feed them!

Hi David,
First of all, congratulations on your final semester-what an accomplishment.
Secondly, being sugar-free for 5 years is amazing.
Your website has been such an inspiration for me-I’m grateful you are able to keep it going even in the midst of your studies. I just watched the video from the Dr. at UCSF and found it fascinating and scary.
Isn’t it unbelievable how we still crave sugar after so long without it? You are fortunate that you get right back on track after your annual binge (Halloween Haunt?). I find it extremely difficult to do so.

I realized I had a sugar problem back in 2003 after a weekend-long binge on raw chocolate chip cookie dough and chocolate covered pretzels. As a result, I began trying to quit sugar but kept failing. Finally, I figured out a way to stay off sweet junk food for good.
Don’t quit sugar. Stop Being Sweet instead! Questions? Please ask!
