Be Your Own Guru!

September 14, 2008 3 Comments

People write to me with sugar questions. I think it’s cool, but I sometimes worry. What if I say the wrong thing? What if my experience isn’t right for someone else?

My advice to people who are quitting sugar: Always ask questions. Always feel free to ask me questions. However, don’t consider me, or anyone else, your sugar-free guru.

I’ll be the person who has been there before you and knows the terrain.

But guess what? You are the guru when it comes to you!

The practice of being your own guru is a tough one.

It means that you need to determine what works for you.

In fact, it’s the only way you’ll ever get to eating healthy and eliminating sweets from your diet.

Consider yourself your own guru. Start now!

You make a good point. However, it is nice to read what you have to say because you have done it! I feel like I have tried so many times to stop eating sugar. I start out really strong, but then day 3 or 4 the argument in my mind is not even there. There is just the “sugar voice” telling me I have to have it now. Does that eventually go away?

No, it never goes away. I still want to eat sweets when I walk down the cookie aisle at the store. That voice tells me it’s okay to have a cookie now and again.

What we need to do is develop “other voices in our head” that remind us how lousy we feel when we eat that stuff. So when the sweet voice tells us it’s okay to eat junk, the other voices overpower it and keep us eating healthy.

I totally agree. Not that I’m completely sugar craving free, but I have improved my sugar eating habits over the years, just by researching and trying out ideas from other people who have done it. And it’s true, what works for one may not work for the other. You have to take these ideas, see if it helps. It’s all about figuring out what works for you.
