Do you talk about sugar with people? Maybe, maybe not.
This week, have a conversation with one or more people about sugar. Ask if they eat it. See if they have trouble regulating their sugar intake.
Ask if they know how much sugar they consume. Notice if they express a sense of concern.
Many people will say they eat more sugar than they’d like to but they don’t do anything about it.
If you speak to your family, friends, or coworkers it is possible that you will find a common interest in avoiding sugar and that means you have a posse.
Getting off and staying off sugar is easier when those around you are also doing it. But that’s not the goal of this weeks challenge. (It could be a result, and that would be wonderful.)
The goal is to listen to others talk about sugar. You’ll be surprised at what you find. Let us know if you have any “ah ha” moments!
Hi everyone! I made it through Easter without sugar, but man, today I’m craving it. It’s in my house now that the kids went to an egg hunt at my grandmother’s house. I let myself get too hungry today - so now I’m a bit ravenous. David, thank you for your email yesterday - it made me smile to know that I’m not alone in this fight - and man does it feel like a FIGHT right now.
Okay, so one moment from yesterday - I was sitting across the table from a distant relative I’ve only met one other time - he’s about 60 years old and very overweight. He didn’t say much the whole day, but when we sat down to dinner, someone mentioned Peeps, and he started talking about how much he LOVED Peeps. He talked for a really long time about Peeps - the colors he liked, the shapes, etc. My aha moment was that how sad it is that this man seems more passionate about sugar than about anything else in life. He’s clearly obese and has many health problems. It’s crazy to me that we feed our bodies garbage and then are surprised when we have health problems? Our bodies are not made to deal with sugar like the sugar in Peeps. It’s maddening that all of these products are in our faces and they’re all tied to celebrations and good times, and yet they are so bad for us. And even though I know how bad they are, I still want them!
One more aha moment - as my kids were collecting eggs from the yard, my son showed my mom one of the eggs he got. It was a purple sugar egg - the ones that are bright colored on the outside and white sugar on the inside. My mom got tears in her eyes remembering her father who died 3 years ago, and said, “That egg was Pops’ all-time favorite candy.” It just reiterated to me the fact that so much of my love for sugar is wrapped up in my need for relationships, the memories of loved ones, the memories of childhood. So now as I create memories with my kids, I’m trying not to make them involve sugar…........ Okay - thanks for listening!

I gave up sugar for lent with the intention of carrying on after easter. I had a binge on easter day and felt dreadful. However strangely enough I no longer feel the need to eat sugar that experience has put me off for life and I actually feel a bit wierd getting it people think I’m nuts for giving up sugar but let them I feel fantastic and liberated.

Katie, it is interesting how people choose to keep eating junk and then blame the junk for their ills. Or they think they just have bad luck.
I noticed that people speak as if they deserve whatever sweet they’re having, especially during dessert.
Sarah, congrats! Sounds like you crossed a threshhold of sorts…

I realized I had a sugar problem back in 2003 after a weekend-long binge on raw chocolate chip cookie dough and chocolate covered pretzels. As a result, I began trying to quit sugar but kept failing. Finally, I figured out a way to stay off sweet junk food for good.
Don’t quit sugar. Stop Being Sweet instead! Questions? Please ask!
