Sugar Challenge: August 2007

August 08, 2007

Keep a score sheet—You VS. Sugar.

Whenever you are presented with the opportunity of eating something sweet this month, do something else.

Eat something healthy instead.

Get up from the table and go to another room.

Play the game.

Don’t worry about lasting the whole month—just worry about each individual mini sugar challenge on a day to day basis.

Check off each time you win and every time sugar wins.

At the end of the month let us know how you did.

Sugar Challenge: July 2007

July 01, 2007

Step 1: Do not buy the usual anything on your shopping list. If you live near a natural market or farmer’s market, shop there and purchase fresh and/or organic food. Try something new.

Step 2: Eat replacement foods every time you crave sweets. If you desire an ice cream dessert, go for a fruit salad instead. Snack on a succulent watermelon or delicious grapes. Eat carrots with hummus. Only eat fresh breads from a place where you can see them come out of the oven. I know, I know, bread = sugar, but if you only allow yourself fresh baked, quality bread it will be easier to make it through a month while avoiding sugary sweets. (Trust me, bread isn’t a bag of candy. We’re going one step at a time here.)

Step 3: Try making new meals with the new and different foods you purchased at the store. Mix stuff together. Imagine yourself cooking for a King or Queen—YOU! Prepare lots of finger foods and eat often.

Step 4: Whatever you do, stay away from candy and sweets and only eat healthy foods. Tell people it’s a temporary diet if they ask. Invite them to try it with you. Challenge them!

One month isn’t that long. See if you can make it through all of July. See if you are able to say, “no,” when people offer you dessert. Are your cravings for sweets so strong that they control you? Can your body handle the dietary difference?

They say, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” Or not. One month without sugar and you might just want to break off your relationship with sweets forever and limit it to an annual visit around the holidays.

Good luck and tell us how you do.

Sugar Challenge: June 2007

June 04, 2007

Try this:

For the rest of June only eat sweets on Sunday.

During the other days of the week—when you get super hungry—eat replacement foods.

Be prepared for extreme hunger! Eat complex carbs like orange juice, healthy (not white) breads, and lots of fruits and veggies.

Eat until you are satisfied. You might find yourself eating a little too much, but know it won’t last forever. When you want sweets, tell yourself it’s just a matter of days.

Try that for June.

It’ll show you a whole lot about yourself and let you see if you really want to stop being sweet for real.

Sugar Challenge: March 2007 A

February 18, 2007

Do you remember what you ate last week? This month’s sugar challenge is not to avoid sugar. Instead, write down everything you eat from the 1st through the 14th of March. You might also record how you feel each day—happy, tired, annoyed, blissful, etc. Include as much information as you can but the main thing is to keep track of your food intake.
