Glad to see this new forum starting about sugar. I tried another sugar forum and it was horrible. All the posts had to be approved by the moderator before they appeared which took about 24 hours. The forum was managed by the author of an anti-sugar book and anything unrelated to the author’s book never appeared at all. Hopefully an army of people will register here and we will have some helpful discussions!

In honor of your two replies, I’ve renamed the “Sugar Free Forum.”
It is now, “Sugar Free Army!”

Excited to be here, this is a great resource. I have gone sugar free on and off for the past 6 months, but I would like to go off it completely now. I heard about this thanks to Think Out Loud this morning, a GREAT show! Thanks for starting this group!

David, I just heard you speak on OPB’s “Think Out Loud” about your fight against sugar addiction, something we have in common. I have tried repeatedly to give up sugar, especially as I have a problem with candida, which is aggravated by sugar consumption. So, here goes, I am going to give this another try, hopefully this time with your help I can be successful in giving up refined sugar. My trigger foods are: chocolate, creamy desserts, ice cream, and cakes (esp. the ones with a buttercream frosting). This is going to hard, as I look forward to frothy hot chocolate at Starbucks daily.

Yes, more unsweet people! Thanks for being here. We’re not alone!
Courtney, what makes you go back on sugar after having been off for a while?
Sootygirl, does Starbucks have anything healthy to drink so that you could start to wean yourself off hot chocolate?

I have only found the teas at Starbucks to be sugar-free. I have replaced my hot chocolate obsession with unsweetened coconut milk and unsweetened cocoa. It is a lovely treat and I don’t feel guilty about having 2 or 3 during the day.

Sugar free Army! I cut sugar to once a week back in 2005. 4 days a year is crazy pants!
Try this: when you really really REALLY want to eat sugar, brush your teeth. I think its something about the minty, kills it for me.
Do you guys find that once you get that sugar thing that you really really REALLY wanted it doesn’t taste as good as you imagined?
Thank you for creating this blog/forum!

cmarie, do you combine the unsweetened coconut milk and unsweetened chocolate into one drink. If so, what proportions do you use? It sounds like a good combination.

I have tried giving up sugar many times over the past 10 years. I may go a month or so but eventually it draws me back. I heard the Think Out Loud program too. I think the idea of a support forum is a great idea.

I have been on and off sugar for the past 2 years I managed to get through lent sugar free however I fell off the wagon and have binged since. I am planning to start again on Monday and I am full of enthusiasm as I am planning a trip of epic proportions in two years time and if I can’t get off sugar I won’t be fit enough or have enough money to take part. My friends and I plan on walking from Canturbry to Rome aprox 1200 miles.
The blog has given me loads of support over the last year and hopefully now the forum will do the same.

@hope, I just do my mixture to taste and sometimes add unsweetened almond milk or instant decaf coffee. I only do one mug full (11 oz) so I know I am consuming less than a grande at SB (16oz)—which I used to get. However, I have mostly been trying to drink green tea through out the day. I find it is best to help with sugar cravings and I feel good after.

Thank you, thank you, thank you David for your website, e-book & forum. I have been struggling with my sugar consumption forever & have gotten worse the last year or so - with just the idea of quitting. I have been off of sugar for very short periods - but this idea of total abstinence has kind of made me more crazy at times (mentally) and excessive with my eating sweets. After reading & listening to your materials I feel like I can move forward with a shorter goal (one month starting today!). I appreciate your practical approach & that you’re not “sugar” coating your experience. I’ve read practically everything out there - and it seems like there is so much analyzing the problem from some arbitrary point of view, that they delay the main issue. After struggling for so long - it feels like a lot of my psychological problems are often caused by the sugar consumption, or at least exacerbated & no amount of psychological tools are going to get me to a better place without getting off the sweets (mostly). But this is just a lot of near-sighted thinking too - since I’ve never been off sugar long enough to really see what life is like without it. I do really appreciate your ideas - at this time - I feel hopeful that I can & am beginning to work on some sort of abstinence. Better to be 75% or more off - than not at all.
