As an experienced web trainer/instructor, I teach website construction using hand-coded Hyper Text Markup Language because it's easy to learn and makes web development more effective.

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. “Markup” is the key word. HTML is not a programming language so it’s easy to learn if you don’t have a computer programmer’s mind.

It’s like music. If you want to make music it behooves you to learn notes, scales, chords, and music theory before buying that huge organ with the rhythm section and the “automatic everything” button. How many people had those things in their living rooms and still couldn’t play a tune? It's the same with building web sites.

Maybe you want to use a WYSIWYG (pronounced “whizzie-wig” - What You See Is What You Get) editor like Dreamweaver. Perhaps you want to use an HTML editor like Homesite, or BB Edit. Either way, knowing HTML applies to just about everything you do on the World Wide Web. I always recommend that people learn at least the basics.

A girl came to my class after working for two years on her company website using Dreamweaver. Several hours into in the class she yelled, “I wish I learned this stuff two years ago!”
