Fitspo: Got a Weight Bench

April 22, 2012 Comments (0)

Yesterday, Gwenn and I walked over the Pearl District garage sale. I found a few old CDs for cheap but the real score was a Danskin Now weight bench for $10. It doesn’t have a barbell holder and it can reverse incline for doing situps or medicine ball exercises. I’m excited to put it to use. On May 1st I’m beginning a healthy fitness journey and will blog about it here.

Where to Find Tai Chi Chuan in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China

April 17, 2012 Comments (0)

During my time in Hangzhou, Zhejiang in 2004, I saw some very interesting martial artists practicing all over the city. If you’re going there or are there and you’re looking for Tai Chi Chuan instruction, here are some suggestions. Keep in mind that I haven’t been there in years!

Zhejiang University

The campus has Tai Chi all over it. When the weather was nice they had an “English Corner” by the Mao statue twice a week in the evenings. Basically people got together and spoke English. If it’s still happening, go there! Many people will want to talk with you if you’re a native English speaker. Ask for where to go for lessons.

The running track in the arena in the middle of the campus had practitioners in the mornings and at 5 pm each day.

There was also an excellent teacher named Master Ma who gave lessons on Saturday and Sunday mornings (8 or 8:30 am) by the stairs of one of the sports buildings. He may or may not be there anymore.

West Lake

On any given morning, show up along the shores at about 5 am and enjoy Tai Chi Chuan practice until about 7 am. Scenic areas with flat, paved areas are choice.

Wu Shan Hill

I think that’s what it’s called. It’s an area where there is a “traditional” styled market (buildings made to look old). It’s basically a tourist trap as there are always tour buses full of retired Americans cruising through to buy red silk pajamas. Anyhow, behind the shopping area are trails that go up into the woodsy hill. That spot is an amazing hub for morning activities. You’ll see tennis players, bird keepers, ball room dancers, chess players, as well as Qigong, Tai Chi, and Gung Fu practitioners everywhere.

Always ask before you join. In my experience, people were very friendly and will enjoy having you practice with them. However, some folks are into doing their own thing. You can usually tell by their body language or where they’re located.

Good luck and please comment if you find a good teacher, school, or location.
